Arianna Staiger Dedicates Song “Ashes” to Her Mother, Marie Mason

From Support Marie Mason

I was on the phone with Marie last night (April 28th) when she mentioned that her daughter, Arianna Staiger, had written a song for her and that it was on Soundcloud.  My computer was handy so I quickly searched for it and sure enough, I found it.  Marie was able to listen to it for the first time ever and though words can’t do that moment justice, it was both beautiful and heart-wrenching.  It was a time when, momentarily Marie was able to pierce through the layers and layers of confinement, separation and restriction  and connect with her daughter.  When the song ended and Marie choked back her tears we talked about the possibility of recording Marie singing over the phone some time soon.  Then, as always, the call was dropped unceremoniously and her time was up.

Be sure to check out the rest of Arianna’s work .

A Thank You from Marie Mason to All Who Wished Her Happy Birthday

masonFrom Support Marie Mason

Greetings Family and Comrades, Well-wishers, fellow activists, anarchists (and non-be/quantifiable),
I want to say thank you for all of the amazing and sweet greetings, cards, letters, photos and artwork that people sent me in response to the event in January. Mail was held up for a bit, but I think that it has all been processed and passed on to me by now.

It was the most incredible inspiration to hear from so many folks working to defend animals, Earth and human rights from so many places! I have learned so much. People sent their stories about great campaigns and histories of struggle, creation stories and poetry, their own beautiful artwork and so much love in words. (more…)

Attorney Claims FBI Violated FOIA in Marie Mason’s Case

masonBy Ryan Abbott,

WASHINGTON (CN) – An attorney whose client is serving 22 years for destroying private property claims the FBI denied her FOIA request, to cover up the government’s “Green Scare” program, meant to chill the speech rights of environmental activists.
New York City attorney Susan Tipograph sued the Department of Justice in Federal Court, seeking records on her client, imprisoned activist Marie Mason.
“The draconian sentencing of Marie Mason to nearly 22 years in federal prison has undoubtedly chilled the free speech practices of other animal rights and environmental activists,” Tipograph says in the complaint. (more…)

January 26th: Celebrate Marie Mason’s Birthday @ Internationalist Books

masonFrom Croatan Earth First!

January 26th is Marie Mason’s Birthday! Come celebrate this herbal healer, musician, mother, activist and eco-sabatour extrordinaire with us at Internationalist Books on Saturday, January 26th at 7pm. We’ll be writing letters and birthday cards to Marie and other eco-prisoners, eating snacks, socializing and watching a short video about the Earth Liberation Front. Marie Mason is presently serving 22 years in prison for a series of arsons against the timber and biotech industries. After being informed on by her ex-husband she took a non-cooperating plea deal, refusing to inform on any of her codefendents. She has been, and continues to be, a very active member of the Earth First Community. Posters and literature about the Earth Liberation Front and earth liberation prisoners will be available.

Marie Mason’s 51st birthday is coming up on January 26, 2013. We are asking that folks hold events for Marie around her birthday as part of what will be an annual time to celebrate her life and keep her spirits up while she remains imprisoned.

We know that the mid-winter holidays are a busy time for everyone, but they are a sad time for the prisoners who remain inside – and everyone wants some cheer on their birthday! So we hope that folks can find time to plan a small event for Marie, such as a letter-writing or birthday party. (If time permits, we recommend that you might want to hold letter writings a week or more earlier so the cards can reach her before the 26th.)
Some people are confused about Marie’s mail situation. It is true that she can only send letters to a pre-approved list of 100 people. However, she can receive letters from anyone and so she will be able to receive all these birthday wishes. (Please be sure that the sender’s first and last name are on the envelope, that letters are all in English – she can receive letters in other languages but will be delayed – and that cards do not have glitter or other things added to them.) June 11th roundup

From June 11th

Another great June 11th, thanks to everyone who organized events, wrote letters, and followed their hearts! There were at least forty events planned, including lots of international solidarity. We’re excited about the level of commitment and love everyone showed that day to long-term anarchist prisoners; it makes us feel sure that our friends won’t be forgotten. Still, a whole year will pass before the next June 11th, and in that year Marie, Eric, and everyone else will need financial and emotional support, as well as more profound kinds of solidarity. The spirit of June 11th can be lived every day.

Below is a roundup of events we heard about; if we missed yours please leave a comment.

A New Year’s Update from Political Prisoner Marie Mason

From Support Marie Mason

Hello and Happy New Year!

It’s been a little more than a year and a half since I was transferred to the Admin Unit at Carswell. Many folks have written wondering if I was in the hospital here, and no, I am not. The Admin Unit is just part of a larger compound that has a major medical center for the Bureau of Prisons. This unit is completely separate from both the compound and the medical center. It’s actually more difficult to see most medical staff from here because of the security detail that must accompany any of us if we leave the unit for any reason.

It is a very small world here; only some 20 women are housed here in complete segregation from general population. It is a mixed unit and serves as both death row and as a kind of control unit. We are fortunately not locked down as often as the men’s units are, as policy in the BOP is different for male and female prisoners. (more…)
