Another break out at Woodland Hills Youth Development Center Friday left officials scrambling to improve security there for the third time this month.

Around 11 p.m. Friday, 13 teenagers broke out of the juvenile lockup after two of them attacked a guard and stole his keys and radio.

Metro police working alongside the Tennessee Highway Patrol had taken 12 of the teens back into custody within hours. Sixteen-year-old Timothy B. Willis from Lawrence County, whose record includes theft, assault and runaway charges, was brought into custody early Sunday morning..

After overpowering the guard, the teens used his keys to get out of their dorm and into an outdoor courtyard on the complex, according to a DCS statement. One of them wriggled through a small gap between the perimeter fence and a rolling gate.

He threw a rock through the guard house window on the other side and opened the gate, freeing the others. (more…)

An official overseeing the Nashville youth detention center where there was a second attempted outbreak in four days after dozens fled the compound said that the teens are “wily” and authorities don’t know what prompted the two outbreaks.

Rob Johnson, the spokesman for the Department of Children’s Services, told ABC News that they have not discovered a clear reason why more than two dozen teens broke out of their dorms and started beating their monitors Wednesday night.

“They’re very wily,” Johnson said of the children. “They’re very cagey and they know the shift patterns.” (more…)

Thirty-Two Teens Break Out of Tennessee Detention Center

Thirty-two teens – ages 14 to 19 – escaped from Woodland Hills Youth Development Center around 11 p.m. Monday by crawling under a weak spot in a fence that surrounded a yard there, Tennessee Department of Children’s Services spokesman Rob Johnson said.

Two teens were recaptured right away and others were found overnight, Johnson said. Local police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are taking part in the search for the teens still at large.

The teens being kept at the detention center have committed at least three felonies, Johnson said.

The escape happened when a large group of teens at the center went out into the yard all at once shortly after a shift change, Johnson said. He said he didn’t know if the escape was planned or spontaneous. A total of 78 teens were being held at the center at the time, Johnson said.
