This Saturday, 11/1: A Very Spooky Really Free Market

From Really Free Carrboro

Saturday, November 1st

@ 2pm

@ The Carrboro Town Commons

This Saturday, come check out our very spooky Really Really Free Market. Autonomous free marketeers are planning a haunted gazebo, a ballot box piñata, and some Halloween themed games.

Everyone is welcome at this free event, where all are encouraged to give, receive, and create on their own terms. This free and open market will be a celebration of the cooperation and gift-giving that make life possible beyond the constraints of capitalist markets. The event is self-organized by everyone who participates. No authority rules over the RRFM. As at previous events, we trust that people sharing rather than competing will be able to find their own ways to cooperate with each other and function smoothly.

Everyone is invited to arrive at 2pm with goods, services, skills, performances, stories, crafts, food, games, music, clothing, furniture, plants, and resources to give and share with others in the community. There is no buying, selling or exchanging involved—in this market, everything is strictly free. Better than a yard sale, the Really Really Free Market has no price tags! (more…)

A Day To Remember: 10 Year Really Really Free Market Anniversary

On Saturday October 4, 2014, around 800 people celebrated a decade of Really Really Free Markets in Carrboro, North Carolina.  From the first piñata breaking at the beginning to the last notes of kora music drifting through the night as the Carrboro Town Commons was cleaned, participants worked and played together to create a day long Carnival Against Capitalism.

We asked participants what their highlights of the festival were.  The free market’s first Spanish language puppet show was often mentioned as a favorite; along with a short play about political prisoners. There was also a puppet show with puppets that were found at a previous free market and reused in yet another performance.  One really really tolerant young person brought joy to many by dressing as a cop and allowing people to pie him for hours. The food has been named with reverence and awe, and no wonder with a cooperative kitchen cooking 300 homemade veggie burgers  and a second kitchen bringing a dinner of curries and chilis to share. One of our DJs noticed a toddler bobbing among costumed dancers from the evening fashion show, another person tabling enjoyed chatting with a much older long term participant who said it was “the nicest time she had ever had.”  Someone helping with the music stage liked seeing the different audiences drawn by the assortment of bands and solo musicians. The winner of the scavenger hunt loved her individually crafted trophy. Silk screening of the I Got It at the Really Really Free Market design lasted well after the last banner was taken down and was one of the most popular crafts. (more…)

Saturday September 6th was the 9 Year and 11 Month Anniversary of the Carrboro Really Really Free Market. That’s 119 Really Really Free Markets. We celebrated by making piñatas for the 120th Really Really Free Market, the 10 year Anniversary next month on OCTOBER 4th at 2PM. Did we mention we’re having a pinata contest? And a birthday cake contest!

This Saturday our world famous free market was visited by Ashanti Alston andSubmedia, both of whom just spoke on UNC campus.  Like always many things were exchanged, from the usual watermelon, ice cream, groceries, boots, books and clothes to the unusual, a telescope! One very happy young person will be doing some late night star gazing from the balcony of their Carrboro apartment.

And next month, cloud cover and light pollution allowing, we can all star gaze together on Carrboro Town Commons. A little astronomy is just one of the many things being shared during our 10 Year Celebration. We’ve confirmed bike repair, radical history, a harm reduction workshop, a puppet show and all kinds of music. Food Not Bombs and Prayers & Pancakes will both be serving up meals and snacks and there will be a grocery distribution as well. (more…)

Countdown to the Really Really Free Festival!

rrfm10-1From Really Free Carrboro

The first fliers are finished announcing the ten-year anniversary of Carrboro’s Really Really Free Market this coming October 4!

Please print and circulate these widely. We are expecting participants from all over the region, making this a day to remember.

In addition to a variety of booths, installations, and the usual cornucopia of free materials, the festival will feature several different tracks of programming: bands, DJs, puppeteers, workshops and discussions, games, and more. If you would like to speak, perform, or organize some other activity, please email carrbororrfm (at) riseup (dot) net.

We have confirmed that the Recyclery will be there fixing bicycles—and giving them away! A licensed massage therapist has signed on, too, alongside other participants. Really really free bicycles, really really free medical care—the sky is the limit. What can you bring?

We will be publishing a preliminary schedule of events and performers shortly. (Alternatively, you could plan to surprise everyone!) There will also be at least two competitions—birthday cakes, and piñatas.

See you this October!
