Georgia Accused Of Sentencing Transgender Woman To ‘Torture’

dragnique-ashley-diamond-revFrom Huffington Post

Georgia’s prison officials will have to explain themselves in court if they continue to refuse hormone therapy to transgender inmates, warns a letter delivered to the state’s Department of Corrections on Tuesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an advocacy group based in Alabama.

Starting in 2012, department employees violated the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment by denying hormone treatment to Ashley Diamond, a transgender inmate who had received the treatment for nearly two decades before entering the prison system, the letter alleges.

If these allegations are true, the officials also breached the department’s own policy, which calls for Georgia’s prisons to provide hormones to all inmates who start taking them before their incarceration.

Political Prisoner Birthday Poster For January 2014 Is Now Available

january-2014-pol-priz-poster-draft-page-001Hello Friends and Comrades,

1) Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for January. This one marks the beginning of our fifth year publishing this poster every month! As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own.

Some News And Updates:

2) Lynne Stewart has been released! Democracy Now! was at the airport when she arrived in New York City and has extensive video coverage of her homecoming.

3) Locally police and politicians have been working hard to cover up the murder of 17 year old Jesús ‘Chuy’ Huerta. Days after the shooting, Chuy’s family, various community members, and activists held a march that drew international attention due to the police’s absurd claims that Chuy killed himself and the ferocity of the large march.  One month later the family called for a march and vigil to the site where Chuy was shot, which ended in chaos when police attacked the vigil. Predictably, the police and politicians are blaming “outside agitators” for everything while targeting youth of color for arrest.  Please contribute to the bail/legal fund to help all of the arrestees of the past two demonstrations.  We’re also asking for people who are able to contribute to the ‘Justice for Chuy’ memorial fund to help his family cover the costs of the funeral and all other related expenses. Lynne Stewart Freed From Prison, Granted “Compassionate Release”

lynnestewart-imprisonedComrades from Jericho have confirmed that Lynne has been released and should be arriving in NYC this morning (January 1st).

From NYC CBS:

A federal judge in Manhattan ordered a “compassionate release” Tuesday from prison for a dying former civil rights lawyer.

The U.S. government requested the release earlier in the day for Lynne Stewart, who was convicted in a terrorism case from prison. Prosecutors say Stewart, 74, suffers from recurrent stage-four breast cancer. She was not scheduled to be released until August 2018.

U.S. District Judge John Koeltl had said he could not release her early without a recommendation for from prison authorities. The director of the Bureau of Prisons made the request through Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York.

“The defendant’s terminal medical condition and very limited life expectancy constitute extraordinary and compelling reasons that warrant the requested reduction” in her prison sentence, Koeltl’s order said.

Stewart has been imprisoned since 2009 after she was convicted of helping a blind Egyptian sheik, Omar Abdel-Rahman, communicate with his followers from prison. (more…)
