Week of Action: May 18-24 (Day of Remembrance May 24)

Justice for Galeano; stop the war against the Zapatista communities!

STATEMENT:

Summary of recent events:
On May 2, 2014, in the Zapatista territory of La Realidad, Chiapas, Mexico, the group CIOAC-H, planned and executed a paramilitary attack on unarmed Zapatista civilians. An autonomous Zapatista school and clinic was destroyed, 15 people were ambushed and injured and Jose Luis Solis Lopez (Galeano), teacher at the Zapatista Little School, was murdered. The mainstream media is falsely reporting this attack on the Zapatistas as an intra-community confrontation, but in fact this attack is the result of a long-term counterinsurgency strategy promoted by the Mexican government.

Given the experience of the 1997 massacre at Acteal, we are concerned about the mounting paramilitary activity against Zapatista bases of support. It is clear that if we do not take action now, the current situation in Chiapas may also lead to an even more tragic end.

Why this matters to us:
Since 1994, the Zapatistas have shown us the bankruptcy of the world that dominates us and, most importantly, the ability to organize ourselves into self-determining communities autonomous from the political class and capitalism. It is this capacity to show that another world is possible in the here and now, one not rooted in exploitation, dispossession, repression and de-valorization, but rather in liberty, democracy and justice, that has inspired us all. An attack on the Zapatistas is an attack on the other world that we have all tried to build along with them for the past 20 years.  (more…)

Solidarity from Chiapas with California prison hunger strike

ZapatistasFrom San Francisco Bay View

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, July 30, 2013 – From the United States, the heart of the empire that imposes its laws on the entire planet, thousands of voices of the most scorned and forgotten people are now being raised to show millions of men and women what dignity really is.

The 30,000 prisoners who have launched a hunger strike in the prisons of California in the United States are our brothers and sisters. All these men and women who refuse to be silent, who are right to rebel, who defend their dignity by defying a powerful government to which the European governments have bowed down deserve the respect and admiration of the whole world.

The United States is a country where freedom is reserved for the rich and well-to-do classes, big businessmen, financiers and the political class. They are free to earn as much money as possible through the business of war and prison after having caused people to become obsessed with the danger of terrorism and criminality. (more…)

Jailbreak! Cat caught with saws, drills and phone in Brazil prison

130106101030-brazil-cat-jailbreak-story-body(CNN) — Prison guards in Brazil’s northeast Alagoas state say they have foiled a jailbreak plot with a surprising accomplice: a black and white cat.

The cat had a cell phone, drills, assorted batteries and two saws taped to its body when it was spotted by guards on December 31 as it was about to enter the prison in Arapiraca, according to a statement released Saturday by Alagoas state prisons.

Prison officials maintain the items attached to the cat were to be used to facilitate a prison break.

The prison’s more than 250 inmates were all considered suspects as officials said they did not immediately know who the cat was suppose to be aiding.

The incident is under investigation, and the cat was handed over to animal control, the statement said.

Bring Alex Home for Christmas!

From Ideas & Actionalejandrotorres

On November 14th, Alejandro Torres was arrested along with five others in Pasadena at a Zapatista solidarity action outside of a speech by Vicente Fox, the ex-president of Mexico. Now more than a month after his arrest he is still in jail. Ever since being hauled away by the police with his comrades that night, Alex has been caged in jail for the single crime of being far too poor to afford the extravagant $100,000 bail that the judge has set for him. Help us bail Alex out of jail so that he can spend Christmas with his family and join us on the outside so that we can fight this case of political repression together! We’ve managed to arrange an agreement with a bail bondsman to bail Alex out for $3,000 instead of the unreachable $10,000 that would normally be required. We think that we can get scrape together the money for this if enough comrades are generous and pitch in.
