Political Prisoner Birthday Poster For June 2017 Is Now Available

June Political Prisoner Birthday Cake

Hello Friends and Comrades,

  1. This Month, June 11th is the International Day of Solidarity with Long-Term Anarchist Prisoners. Do something fierce in your community to commemorate these prisoners.
  2. Continue to support the troops facing 80 years and 8 felonies fighting against the clown regime.
  3. Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for June.(11″x17″ PDF, 2.45MB) Also available in color here, and as a shareable PNG here (imgur link). Print it out and plaster your community, both in commemoration of these freedom fighters and to advertise locally for a political prisoner letter writing night. Get together with some friends in your town to send birthday cards to these fighters in our struggle. It’s an easy way to help remind them that they aren’t forgotten. If you make one, remember—don’t use anything like white-out, stickers, tape or glitter on it. We also recommend that you put a return name and address and their name and prisoner number on the card, lest the authorities “lose” the envelope and forget where it is going. If you would like to add a birthday or sign up for our poster mailing list (not a listserv, one email per month), or if you would like to contribute in another way to increasing the profile of US political prisoners, email us at ppbirthday@riseup.net.
  4. Do you need help advertising for your local Political Prisoner Letter Writing Night? Are you interested in distributing physical copies of the poster? Write to us and let’s find a way to get physical copies of our poster to you: ppbirthday@riseup.net
  5. Be sure to check out the latest Political Prisoner/Prisoner Of War every-other week update (PDF, [##]KB) by the NYC-Anarchist Black Cross. There are lots of important updates on many political prisoners. This one includes updates on DAPL defendants, Sekou Kambui, Leonard Peltier, and more.

Remember: They are in there for us, we are out here for them!

Reflections on June 11 and its Potential

From Earth First! Newswire/By Panagioti

Hopefully by now you’ve returned safely home from a quaint letter-writing potluck or an epic road blockade in solidarity with the incarcerated environmental activists and eco-revolutionaries of the world. Perhaps you’re now ready to sit and reflect, and maybe even start thinking about what we should do next year. If that sounds like you, please read on.

Let’s start with the history

It’s been 11 years since the first time that activists coordinated an international day of solidarity action around the case of environmental prisoner Jeff Luers. Luers was charged with a relatively small crime, damaging several SUVs in a car dealership lot, but sentenced to 22 years in prison with the explicit intention of sending a chilling message to the environmental movement. It’s a history that could easily be forgotten, given how quickly the webpages that document these things tend to come and go. It felt lucky to find an existing link on Portland IMC that so thoroughly captured that event (and it felt disconcerting that the majority of hyperlinks embedded in there were dead.) The date in that call-out was actually June 12, and people planned actions throughout mid-June in response to that call.

The article included reportbacks from 23 events including places as a far as Russia, Norway and Australia, with a focus on the event in Jeff’s hometown prior to incarceration, Eugene, OR. His parents showed up to greet a crowd of several hundred with this message:

Good evening… .Thank you all for coming… .Today is intended to be a day for public education and awareness about Jeff and his case… .The FBI, in it’s bulletin to law enforcement agencies, has chosen to make it sound like an ELF (Earth Liberation Front) call to action. That’s wrong, but it got Jeff and his case some good publicity in places such as Morgantown, West Virginia and Palm Beach, Florida that may not have developed otherwise….My wife, Judy, and I want to thank all of the organizers and attendees at this event and similar events around the world designed to bring attention to the injustice done to our son, Jeff “Free” Luers.

Aside from getting Jeff’s parents to turn out for it, there were some other unique and important components to the first “June 11″ event. (more…)

Political Prisoner Birthday Poster For June 2015 Is Now Available

Hello Friends and Comrades,

1) Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for June. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own.

2) June 11th is the international day of solidarity with Marius Mason, and all long-term anarchist prisoners. There’s still time to organize something in your town. You can find more info on organizing an event and what has happened in previous years here.

3) Sekou Kambui spent forty years behind bars as a political prisoner, and now he needs our help!

The former Panther, CORE, and SCLC member was diagnosed with liver cancer shortly after his release, and has been in and out of the hospital for cancer treatment as well as other health problems, including severe edema in his leg. The edema requires almost weekly trips to the hospital to have fluid drained from his leg, an expense in time and money he can’t afford. Though chemotherapy has produced encouraging results so far, the medical bills keep piling up. Despite his poor health, Sekou has continued his work with the organization he founded in prison, the Social Consciousness Development Group, and has continued to speak publicly on behalf of U.S. Political Prisoners. Now he needs our support to get through the trying times ahead.

Help Sekou Kambui continue his long fight for justice in good health! Donate here.

4) Prison Legal News recently celebrated its 25th year. Check out this interview with their editor Paul Wright drawing connections between environmental movements and anti-prison movements.

5) Be sure to check out the latest Political Prisoner/Prisoner Of  War every-other week update by the  NYC-Anarchist Black Cross. There are lots of important updates on many political prisoners.

This week we’re speaking with Eric McDavid, a recently released eco-anarchist and vegan. Eric and his two co-defendants (Lauren Weiner and Zachary Jenson) were entrapped by an FBI agent provocateur who went by the name of “Anna” and arrested for allegedly planning to blow up cell-phone towers, small dams & a lab researeching genetically modifying trees. Eric was arrested in January of 2006 during an FBI raid on the cabin that “Anna” was providing for the four.

During the court case, the government prosecutors were able to turn Zachary and Lauren against their slightly older co-defendant, Eric, with threats of spending decades of their life behind bars. So, Zachary and Lauren posed Eric as their “leader” and threw him under the bus. As a result, Eric was given a 20 year sentence for what was effectively the charge of being guilty of Thought Crime.
