“The Failure of Nonviolence: From Arab Spring to Occupy”

Email ibooks@internationalistbooks.org to reserve your copy of the book, or for more information.

The readings and meetings will be split into three sections:

Monday, April 7th at 7:00pm

Monday, April 14th, at 7:00pm

Monday, April 21st, at 7:00pm

About the book:

“From the Arab Spring to the plaza occupation movement in Spain, the student movement in the UK and Occupy in the US, many new social movements have started peacefully, only to adopt a diversity of tactics as they grew in strength and collective experiences. The last ten years have revealed more clearly than ever the role of nonviolence. Propped up by the media, funded by the government, and managed by NGOs, nonviolent campaigns around the world have helped oppressive regimes change their masks, and have helped police to limit the growth of rebellious social movements. Increasingly losing the debates within the movements themselves, proponents of nonviolence have increasingly turned to the mainstream media and to government and institutional funding to drown out critical voices. 2014 Bob Sheldon Award Honors the Work of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Celebrating BREDL’s 30th Anniversary

Bob Sheldon founded Internationalist Books in 1981. More than 20 years after his tragic death, Bob’s memory endures through the friends, family and community that knew him, the work he did, and the project he began that has continued for decades to bring people together and inspire political action in North Carolina. His example shows us that living a life of conviction creates something that can outlast our own times.  We award the Bob Sheldon Award each year in his memory to celebrate collective resistance and groups or individuals whose work nurtures our communities and our commitments to justice.
This year, we have chosen to give the Bob Sheldon Award to the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL). BREDL is a regional, community-based, non-profit organization whose founding principles are earth stewardship, environmental democracy, social justice, and community empowerment. As BREDL celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, we want to honor their rich history of supporting people in defense of the environment and environmental justice. We applaud their style of organizing to support local, autonomous organizing. BREDL chapters work to oppose a range of threats to the environment and human communities across the Southeast, and we encourage everyone to learn more about their work and 30th anniversary celebrations at their website: www.bredl.org.bredlWe are especially grateful for BREDL’s work in recent years in the fight against fracking in North Carolina. We are inspired by the work that BREDL is doing to support and grow grassroots resistance with their local chapters, educational materials, speaking tours, thorough research and tenacious monitoring of legislative and industry developments. We believe our communities can work together to defeat fracking before it begins here, and we think the work of BREDL is invaluable to that effort.  (more…)

droneguideCome into Internationalist Books and get your free copy of the DRONE SURVIVAL GUIDE.

From Drone Survival Guide

Our ancestors could spot natural predators from far by their silhouettes. Are we equally aware of the predators in the present-day? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicted in 2012 that within 20 years there could be as many as 30.000 drones flying over U.S. Soil alone. As robotic birds will become commonplace in the near future, we should be prepared to identify them. This document contains the silhouettes of the most common drone species used today and in the near future. Each indicating nationality and whether they are used for surveillance only or for deadly force. All drones are drawn in scale for size indication. From the smallest consumer drones measuring less than 1 meter, up to the Global Hawk measuring 39,9 meter in length. (more…)
