birthday cakeHello Friends and Comrades,

1) Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for September. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own.

2) A bail and legal fund has been established to support the 43 or so people who have been arrested during the initial anti-police demonstrations in Ferguson, Mo. Please spread the word widely and help get some money together to get these people out.

All funds collected will be used to support those arrested during the demonstrations–their bail money, fines, legal funds, or other related expenses. In the unlikely event that there are additional funds, they will be used to support people resisting police repression and police violence in the future. Thank you.

For more information on what’s been going on in Ferguson you can check out these articles on our blog.

Bike-In Dinner & A Movie Benefit Sat Aug 30

flyerbikebenefitFrom Piedmont Earth First!

On Saturday, August 30th bike-in to check out Internationalist Bookstore’s soon-to-be new space in Carrboro at 101 Lloyd St.  All proceeds go to help Internationalist move to the new space and build new bookshelves.  At 7 p.m., we’ll be serving a home-cooked Southern dinner including mashed potatoes with local mushroom gravy, hoppin’ john, and sauteed collared greens (all vegan), and lemon balm iced tea.  There will be popcorn and other concessions available.  The movie will start promptly at 8 p.m.  We’re asking each person for a suggested donation of $20 but whatever you can give is appreciated.  Members of Piedmont Earth First! and friends of Ibooks are hosting this event out of appreciation for the many years Internationalist has allowed us to host free events in their space.  Spread widely!

“This move is a huge undertaking, and a huge leap of faith. We need our community’s support to make this move successful. Please donate whatever you can to pay for the costs of renovations, new bookshelves and furniture, and to help us weather the financial impact of a big move and establish ourselves firmly in our new home. We also want to invite our community to help with workdays in the new space, help us spread the word, and help us with a vision for our new space and the amazing ways our work can grow through this move.”

Announcing the Fifth Annual Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair!

carrboro-anarchist-bookfair-posterFrom Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair

The fifth annual Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair will take place the weekend of November 22, 2014 in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, North Carolina. Don’t miss one of the Southeast’s most exciting educational and agitational events!

In the first four years of its existence, the Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair has coincided with a higher proportion of nationally reported riots and building occupations than any other book fair worldwide. This book fair is the ideal occasion to strike back against murderous white supremacist policing, create an anti-capitalist autonomous zone, or just read a lot of great books and ‘zines.

This will be an especially busy autumn for central NC. On October 4, Carrboro’s monthly Really Really Free Market will celebrate its ten-year anniversary with a massive free festival. Meanwhile, our decades-running community center, Internationalist Books, is moving from Chapel Hill to a new and improved location in Carrboro…making this the first ever Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair to actually hold events in Carrboro! History and Memory at Internationalist Books and Community Center

1995_moving_outFrom Internationalist Books

As we work busily on the move, we want to share a couple of projects that we’ve been working on recently focused on preserving the history of Internationalist Books and Community Center.

Internationalist Books Archival Collection at the Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library

After working together with Kelly Wooten, Ibooks veteran and incredible librarian, we’re thrilled to be able to announce that we have now placed a collection of records and materials from Internationalist Books and Community Center with the Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library. As we develop this archival collection, we are striving to preserve the many narratives of the life of this project, and the many amazing generations of the store. We’re thrilled to be working with Kelly and the Rubenstein, which is also where Bob Sheldon’s papers are held.

If you have pictures, flyers, zines, pamphlets, or other materials from your time in the shop that you’d like to place with the collection, please feel free to be in touch! (more…)

Political Prisoner Birthday Poster For August 2014 Is Now Available

A clash of utopias! Come demonstrate the life you would prefer to capitalism. Set up a booth, offer a workshop, put on a performance, screen a film, carry out some dramatic action, obtain and distribute some resource no one could imagine being free. We want to see a wide range of utopian visions and ungovernable desires manifested. Rather than simply opposing what exists, reactively, we dare you to demonstrate that your alternative to competition and obedience is more nourishing, more exciting, and more fulfilling than anything the market can offer.

More info here. See you in October! (more…)

Internationalist Books and Community Center is Moving!

ibookssignFrom Internationalist Books

Internationalist Books is moving and we need your help!

Internationalist Books and Community Center has been an invaluable part of our community since 1981. We are moving from our current location on Franklin St to Carrboro. Our new space will give us a better ability to host programs, projects and events, and make us better able to keep Internationalist strong and growing into the future. This move is a huge undertaking, and a huge leap of faith. We need our community’s support to make this move successful. Please donate whatever you can to pay for the costs of renovations, new bookshelves and furniture, and to help us weather the financial impact of a big move and establish ourselves firmly in our new home. We also want to invite our community to help with workdays in the new space, help us spread the word, and help us with a vision for our new space and the amazing ways our work can grow through this move.

This opportunity has presented itself in a way where we had to seize the moment quickly, so we’ll be announcing big fundraising events in the near future. In the meantime, there are lots of ways to donate and help us spread the word! (more…)

Recently freed political prisoner Eddie Conway, when asked by Amy Goodman what gave him hope for the 44 years he was in prison, said:

“Well, I appreciate you asking me that, because I want to take this opportunity to thank the tens of thousands of people that have supported me over the years and that have sent letters, postcards, marched, rallied, organized across America, around the world. Those letters, postcards, rallies, marches, organizing, etc., gave me hope, gave me encourage, gave me energy, and kept my spirit high. And it made me know that I was loved. And that same love needs to go out to the other political prisoners that remain locked up today for almost 40 years, most of them. And one of them is a little over 44 years. They need to have that same kind of support, that same kind of encouragement and that same kind of work to help get them free, because I think when you know that people work and love you, then you can do work yourself. And I think those are what political prisoners are doing, work in their particular areas, and they need to be encouraged to do that by people coming out and giving them that kind of support that I got.”
