North Carolina GOP Pushes Unprecedented Bill to Jail Anyone Who Discloses Fracking Chemicals

frackingchemBy Molly Redden / Mother Jones

As hydraulic fracturing ramps up around the country, so do concerns about its health impacts. These concerns have led 20 states to require the disclosure of industrial chemicals used in the fracking process.

North Carolina isn’t on that list of states yet—and it may be hurtling in the opposite direction.

On Thursday, three Republican state senators introduced a bill that would slap a felony charge on individuals who disclosed confidential information about fracking chemicals. The bill, whose sponsors include a member of Republican party leadership, establishes procedures for fire chiefs and health care providers to obtain chemical information during emergencies. But as the trade publication Energywire noted Friday, individuals who leak information outside of emergency settings could be penalized with fines and several months in prison.

“The felony provision is far stricter than most states’ provisions in terms of the penalty for violating trade secrets,” says Hannah Wiseman, a Florida State University assistant law professor who studies fracking regulations.

The bill also allows companies that own the chemical information to require emergency responders to sign a confidentiality agreement. And it’s not clear what the penalty would be for a health care worker or fire chief who spoke about their experiences with chemical accidents to colleagues. (more…)

Updates About Jailed MSEF Activists!

marcellusFrom Marcellus Shale Earth First!

All 5 of our brave friends are in goods spirits!  They where arrested Thursday during the lock down to block one of Anadarko’s drill sites on state land,   At this time, they are all content to stay in jail and not be bonded out.  This Weds they have their first court date and will be hoping for a bail reduction of their ridiculously high bails ($57,500 total!) for a non-violent protest.  We will be attempting to visit everyone this week at Lycoming County Prison in Williamsport, PA.  Their first court date is this Weds and we will be able to give more updates on their legal situation then.

In the mean time, please donate to their legal fund at https://fundly.com/marcellus-shale-earth-first.

If you want to send any messages of support to John Nicholson, Zora Gussow, Sierra Moy, or our other 2 friends (who wish to not have their names publicized), please email them to msefmedia@gmail.com and we will get the messages to them.  We will update with more information soon about how to send letters to them in jail.

2014 Bob Sheldon Award Honors the Work of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Celebrating BREDL’s 30th Anniversary

Bob Sheldon founded Internationalist Books in 1981. More than 20 years after his tragic death, Bob’s memory endures through the friends, family and community that knew him, the work he did, and the project he began that has continued for decades to bring people together and inspire political action in North Carolina. His example shows us that living a life of conviction creates something that can outlast our own times.  We award the Bob Sheldon Award each year in his memory to celebrate collective resistance and groups or individuals whose work nurtures our communities and our commitments to justice.
This year, we have chosen to give the Bob Sheldon Award to the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL). BREDL is a regional, community-based, non-profit organization whose founding principles are earth stewardship, environmental democracy, social justice, and community empowerment. As BREDL celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, we want to honor their rich history of supporting people in defense of the environment and environmental justice. We applaud their style of organizing to support local, autonomous organizing. BREDL chapters work to oppose a range of threats to the environment and human communities across the Southeast, and we encourage everyone to learn more about their work and 30th anniversary celebrations at their website: www.bredl.org.bredlWe are especially grateful for BREDL’s work in recent years in the fight against fracking in North Carolina. We are inspired by the work that BREDL is doing to support and grow grassroots resistance with their local chapters, educational materials, speaking tours, thorough research and tenacious monitoring of legislative and industry developments. We believe our communities can work together to defeat fracking before it begins here, and we think the work of BREDL is invaluable to that effort.  (more…)

Marcellus Earth First! fights the frack & Jerry Koch fights the SGJ

toxic-avengerThe Final Straw this week features two conversations.

In the first interview, William discusses the Marcellus bioregion with Oz from Marcellus Earth First!, the dangers posed by fracking that shale and what resistance has looked like in PA. Here they also announce the beginning of a forest defense campaign with a tree sit in Loyalsock State Forest as an expansion of their struggle against the Anadarko’s attempts to expand fracking. http://marcellusearthfirst.org/

In the second conversation, Bursts talks to Randall of the Support Jerry Committee about the history of Grand Juries, Jerry’s legal team’s recently filed appeal to his imprisonment, and broader strategies to resisting GJ’s. Randall also announces a new website for sharing resources and research on the repression of Anarchists in the U.S., found at anarchistwitchhunt.org. (more…)

Joint Terrorism Task Force Approaches Anti-Fracking Activists

dont-talk-to-the-f-b-iFrom Croatan Earth First!

This week in Maryland, the the Joint Terrorism Task Force visited the home of an activist in Maryland, regarding the Momentive anti-fracking action on July 8 in North Carolina, and attempted to speak with their family.

“On the afternoon of Thursday August 15th, two members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force visited the homes of anti-fracking activists in the Frederick, MD. This is related to recent actions against fracking that area activists participated in during the EF! rondy. If you are also visited please let your local legal support know. More importantly, if they come to your home please do not speak to them, and of course we will do the same.”
-Some local activists

This week, the FBI has also been poking around Northeastern anarchist communities. They have also approached climate activists in the Northwest.  If you act or advocate against fracking, or are tied to communities that do, there is a  chance that federal agents may approach you or someone you know in attempt to find out more information about radical communities.  Often, agents will also attempt to target peripheral people who they believe they can easily manipulate in order to find information to build cases against others.  As a precaution, speak with your household, friends and family about what to do if agents come to  your house, and how important it is to not interact with them at all.  You have no legal obligation to speak with them, and any interactions you do can only serve to harm you or someone else. 2013 Earth First! Round River Rendezvous in North Carolina July 1-8th

rondy11x17From Earth First! Newswire

The Round River Rendezvous is the annual gathering of the Earth First! Movement.  Each Summer, this week-long camp-out attracts several hundred Earth First!ers from around the world. The gathering is coordinated by a volunteer committee and includes workshops, campaign discussions, campfire music and a rally with performers and speakers. Perhaps the most important part of the Round River Rendezvous is the informal networking that goes on.  These gatherings are particularly important for developing a cohesive activist network and planning actions on a local level.

We are thrilled to announce that Croatan Earth First! will be hosting next summer’s rendezvous in central North Carolina.  The exact location to be announced close to the week of the event. The spot we are choosing should have swimming holes and beautiful woods to hike in.  As for new content, we’ll be offering more earth skills, plant/mushroom identification, and ecospirituality workshops to the this year’s gathering as well as medic trainings. We’re looking for folks to host workshops, and to submit ideas for workshops/panels they’d like to see.

If you have access to money please consider donating to our wepay.  If you need to contact us regarding the rendezvous, email cef@riseup.net or croatanearthfirst@gmail.com

Please see this site for more information including tentative schedule, anti-oppression statement and guidelines:  (more…)

Tanner Long Sentenced for Frack Site Sabotage in PA

Tanner J. Long of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania

Tanner J. Long of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania

From Earth First! Newswire

As far as we can tell, there’s been no clear reason expressed about why he did it. But does there really need to be? Anyone who risks their freedom to attack a fracking site in the Marcellus Shale, and in one evening succeeds at delaying operations for three months, is a hero to all who drink water and hate energy corporations.

Tanner Long, 21, from the Trout Run area of Lycoming County, PA, allegedly admitted to an ambitious act of vandalism on August 30, 2012, and was sentenced in late-January to six months of prison (in a “county pre-release center”) and five years probation.

The story was not heavily reported outside the local area, but you can check out a short news clip here, which includes heart warming images of overturned bulldozers at a trashed fracking site on public land. (more…)

Croatan Earth First! Locks Down NC DENR For Complicity In Fracking

Seven members of Croatan Earth First! and participants from our Piedmont Direct Action Camp locked together today, barricading the front of North Carolina’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) building in downtown Raleigh. Providing physical, active resistance against fracking in North Carolina, CEF! has chosen DENR for an action as they are responsible for helping legalize fracking, and will be responsible for regulating it. They have also hired a corrupt Mining and Energy Commission board, which includes people with vested interests in hydraulic fracturing occurring. We are letting them know that this farce won’t stand! No compromise in defense of Mother Earth! (more…)
