Man cleared in Durham police officer’s shooting

— A Durham man was acquitted Friday of shooting a police officer three years ago, with jurors convicting him only of common law robbery in the case.

Officer Kelly Stewart was shot in the thigh during a confrontation with Carlos Antonio Riley Jr. following a December 2012 traffic stop. Stewart testified that Riley was being uncooperative and shot him after the two got into a fist fight. But Riley’s defense attorney insisted that Stewart accidentally shot himself with his own gun during the struggle.

“I believed this was going to happen. My faith, my faith, my faith and prayer. Prayers going up, and prayers come down,” a relieved Patricia Riley, Riley’s grandmother, said after the verdict was announced.

“The truth always prevails over all things,” said Riley’s mother, Karen Judd. “My son always has to be honest. I taught him that. I taught him to treat people in a humane way. During this trial, they were trying to portray him as a vicious criminal.”

Stewart was unavailable for comment Friday, and Police Chief Jose Lopez expressed disappointment in the outcome. (more…)

JUSTICE FOR CHUY MEANS JUSTICE FOR ALL. March to the vigil!

chuy** MAS ABAJO ESTA EN ESPAÑOL**

Sunday, January 19th at 5:30pm in Durham

Exact start location TBA

Join us January 19th for a peaceful march that will mark 2 months since the death of our beloved brother, son, and friend: Jesús “Chuy” Huerta.

Chuy’s death has become a nationwide issue because of the demonstrations that have taken place. Please come and join those who have been in the streets from the beginning and let’s make this call for justice even stronger.

People from all ages and all walks of life are welcomed.

Chuy’s friends and family want justice for all the people affected by police violence. There can’t be reconciliation without justice. There can’t be reconciliation with an organized gang in blue that keeps our communities and children terrorized. There can’t be reconciliation with a police department that continues to criminalize the memory of Chuy Huerta and the lives of all of his peers. (more…)

Durham New Year’s Eve Demo: Noise, More Noise, and Lots of Rage

jail

Joining dozens of similar demonstrations around North America and the world, on New Year’s Eve fifty or so comrades and several family members of inmates met up at 7:30 pm at the jail in downtown Durham to show our rage and hatred for the prison system, and our solidarity with prisoners on the inside. Armed with black flags, pots and pans, a drum corps, and numerous banners (“Against Prisons,” “Solidarity with Prisoners Everywhere,” “Total Liberation from Domination,” “Love for All Prison Rebels,”) we chanted, screamed, and directed a cacophonous melody of anger at the guards changing shifts. It was subtly amplified by the shouts and banging of prisoners from the small plexiglass windows of their cells, whose faces were visible as dark silhouettes standing out against the modernist architectural gloom of the building complex. Durham, NC: Cop Shoots Self With His Own Gun In Stop, Then Charges Man With Assault

gunFrom Boots Riley of The Coup via Facebook

My 21 year-old cousin, Carlos Riley, Jr, was stopped by a cop in Durham, NC
mid morning on December 18th.

During the stop, the cop shouted expletives, physically attacked Carlos,
verbally threatened to kill him and attempted to draw his weapon to shoot
at my cousin.

While attempting to draw his weapon, the cop shot himself in the leg. This
is actually a common occurrence for police while drawing their weapons.

Fearing for his life, Carlos fled the scene in his car. According to the
police, at this point he also took the cop’s weapon and badge away from him
(If this happened, it was a smart move to make sure the cop didn’t shoot
him in the back). (more…)
