Announcing the Fifth Annual Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair!

The fifth annual Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair will take place the weekend of November 22, 2014 in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, North Carolina. Don’t miss one of the Southeast’s most exciting educational and agitational events!

In the first four years of its existence, the Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair has coincided with a higher proportion of nationally reported riots and building occupations than any other book fair worldwide. This book fair is the ideal occasion to strike back against murderous white supremacist policing, create an anti-capitalist autonomous zone, or just read a lot of great books and ‘zines.

This will be an especially busy autumn for central NC. On October 4, Carrboro’s monthly Really Really Free Market will celebrate its ten-year anniversary with a massive free festival. Meanwhile, our decades-running community center, Internationalist Books, is moving from Chapel Hill to a new and improved location in Carrboro…making this the first ever Carrboro Anarchist Book Fair to actually hold events in Carrboro! Developers halt plans for Carrboro CVS

carborocommuneFrom Daily Tarheel

Developers have pulled the application for a CVS/Pharmacy at the site, meaning there are no current development plans for a CVS at that location, according to the Active Project Report for Carrboro from earlier this year.

The developer pulled the CVS proposal after members of the Carrboro Board of Alderman said they likely wouldn’t rezone the property and repeatedly delayed their discussion of the site, said Martin Roupe, the town’s development review administrator, in the report.

Trish McGuire, planning director of Carrboro , said while the board did not initially wish to rezone the property, they would have considered a revised plan for the business. She has not heard from the developers since they pulled the application.

Carrboro Commune protest lobs ‘seed bombs’ at planned Carrboro CVS site

From The News and Observer

CARRBORO — A group “of “anti-capitalist” activists that briefly took over the site of a proposed CVS drugstore in downtown Carrboro last month returned Saturday and planted herbs along the property fence.

About 50 people gathered for the “Guerilla Gardening” event. Demonstrators decorated the chain link fence and trees and lobbed “seed bombs” made of clay, dirt and wildflower seeds over the fence onto the lawn.

Police charged one person chalking the street with impeding traffic, Police Chief Carolyn Hutchison said.
The demonstration followed a brief February takeover of a building at the site that ended when police warned those inside they would be arrested if they did not leave. That incident followed the takeover of a vacant former car dealership in neighboring Chapel Hill last fall.

Some of Saturday’s demonstrators participated in those events and also in the Occupy Chapel Hill-Carrboro movement, which did not endorse the building takeovers.

The “Guerilla Gardening” demonstrators said they wanted to make people aware of the CVS plan and the broader influence of corporations in Chapel Hill-Carrboro and beyond. (more…)

Carrboro: Anarchists Seize Future CVS Building

From Carrboro Commune

At approximately 3:30pm today, Feb. 4th, a group of about 50 demonstrators marched from a monthly Really Really Free Market to a nearby empty building owned by the CVS corporation.

Within minutes the crowd had taken over the building, hanging banners from the roof and windows, erecting tables outside with free food, and handing out welcome packets to passersby.

Others arrived with carpentry equipment, wood, furniture, a literature distro, and tools, and began building benches and tables. Some painted a large, cursive “Carrboro Commune @” and large squat symbols on the walls. (more…)
