History and Memory at Internationalist Books and Community Center

1995_moving_outFrom Internationalist Books

As we work busily on the move, we want to share a couple of projects that we’ve been working on recently focused on preserving the history of Internationalist Books and Community Center.

Internationalist Books Archival Collection at the Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library

After working together with Kelly Wooten, Ibooks veteran and incredible librarian, we’re thrilled to be able to announce that we have now placed a collection of records and materials from Internationalist Books and Community Center with the Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library. As we develop this archival collection, we are striving to preserve the many narratives of the life of this project, and the many amazing generations of the store. We’re thrilled to be working with Kelly and the Rubenstein, which is also where Bob Sheldon’s papers are held.

If you have pictures, flyers, zines, pamphlets, or other materials from your time in the shop that you’d like to place with the collection, please feel free to be in touch! (more…)

Internationalist Books and Community Center is Moving!

Internationalist Books is moving and we need your help!

Internationalist Books and Community Center has been an invaluable part of our community since 1981. We are moving from our current location on Franklin St to Carrboro. Our new space will give us a better ability to host programs, projects and events, and make us better able to keep Internationalist strong and growing into the future. This move is a huge undertaking, and a huge leap of faith. We need our community’s support to make this move successful. Please donate whatever you can to pay for the costs of renovations, new bookshelves and furniture, and to help us weather the financial impact of a big move and establish ourselves firmly in our new home. We also want to invite our community to help with workdays in the new space, help us spread the word, and help us with a vision for our new space and the amazing ways our work can grow through this move.

This opportunity has presented itself in a way where we had to seize the moment quickly, so we’ll be announcing big fundraising events in the near future. In the meantime, there are lots of ways to donate and help us spread the word! (more…)

2014 Bob Sheldon Award Honors the Work of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Celebrating BREDL’s 30th Anniversary

Bob Sheldon founded Internationalist Books in 1981. More than 20 years after his tragic death, Bob’s memory endures through the friends, family and community that knew him, the work he did, and the project he began that has continued for decades to bring people together and inspire political action in North Carolina. His example shows us that living a life of conviction creates something that can outlast our own times.  We award the Bob Sheldon Award each year in his memory to celebrate collective resistance and groups or individuals whose work nurtures our communities and our commitments to justice.
This year, we have chosen to give the Bob Sheldon Award to the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL). BREDL is a regional, community-based, non-profit organization whose founding principles are earth stewardship, environmental democracy, social justice, and community empowerment. As BREDL celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, we want to honor their rich history of supporting people in defense of the environment and environmental justice. We applaud their style of organizing to support local, autonomous organizing. BREDL chapters work to oppose a range of threats to the environment and human communities across the Southeast, and we encourage everyone to learn more about their work and 30th anniversary celebrations at their website: www.bredl.org.bredlWe are especially grateful for BREDL’s work in recent years in the fight against fracking in North Carolina. We are inspired by the work that BREDL is doing to support and grow grassroots resistance with their local chapters, educational materials, speaking tours, thorough research and tenacious monitoring of legislative and industry developments. We believe our communities can work together to defeat fracking before it begins here, and we think the work of BREDL is invaluable to that effort.  (more…)

Human Rights Center Donates 4 Truckloads Of Books

hrccentroA huge thank you to the Human Rights Center, recipient of the 2012 Bob Sheldon Award, for donating over a 1,000 books to us this last Sunday. The donation included a lot of much needed African- American non-fiction as well as books about economics, labor struggles, human rights, art, and more. Donations like this help us keep up with the demand for relevant and interesting non-fiction.

We wanted to publicly thank this organization that already does so much good work in the community for their generosity and compassion towards prisoners.

We can’t wait to start sending these in.

Thanks Human Rights Center.

Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for March. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own. We’re still experimenting with the format a little, so this month is also a double sided 11×17 that can also be used as a poster to promote your local letter writing night.

Every year Internationalist Books and Community Center – the bookstore that sponsors our Prison Books collective – gives out the Bob Sheldon Award. They do this in honor of Bob Sheldon, who founded Internationalist Books in 1981 and ran it until he was murdered in 1991. They used the 2013 award to recognize the many bold organizers inside the prisons of North Carolina, saying “This year, we choose to honor the bravery and resilience of people engaged in struggle against some of the most crushing odds in our society – the violence and captivity of the state.”  Here is their full statement.
